REM demand that Fox News stop playing 'Losing My Religion'

Band sends cease and desist letter after the network allegedly uses 'Losing My Religion' without permission

REM have sent a cease and desist letter to Fox News after the network allegedly used the band's music without permission.

Fox News played REM's classic 1991 single 'Losing My Religion' during its coverage of the Democratic National Convention last night (September 6). However, the US 24-hour news network apparently failed to acquire the proper authorisation first.

A statement posted on REM's official website earlier today (September 7) reads: "REM's 'Losing My Religion' was used in the Fox News coverage of the Democratic National Convention last night. REM today, through its music publisher, Warner-Tamerlane Music, demanded that Fox News cease and desist from continuing its unlicensed and unauthorized use of the song."

Rounding off the statement, former REM frontman Michael Stipe explained why the band had taken issue with the network's alleged misuse of 'Losing My Religion'. He added: "We have little or no respect for their puff adder brand of reportage. Our music does not belong there."

According to the usual chain of events started by a cease and desist letter, if Fox News fails to obey the demand, REM may bring legal proceedings against the network.

Last September (2011), REM posted a statement on their official website announcing that they had decided to "call it a day as a band". They had released 15 studio albums during their 31-year recording career, the most recent being 2011's 'Collapse Into Now'.
